What Helps Excruciating Toothache?

Blog

Although a toothache is not always life-threatening, living with severe pain can be frustrating. You may find yourself jumping from one pain relief option to another and still struggling to eat, sleep, or focus. If you have excruciating pain in or around a tooth, the ideas below may help temporarily while you arrange dental care.

Pain medicine or a cold compress may help for a short time, but severe tooth pain usually needs an exam to find the cause. If deep decay, nerve inflammation, or infection is involved, the next step may be emergency root canal treatment.

What are the Causes of an Excruciating Toothache?

Quite a handful of reasons may cause an excruciating toothache. But here are the commonest.

  • Tooth decay
  • Tooth fracture
  • Damaged filling
  • Abscessed tooth

If the tooth cannot be saved, the dentist may discuss emergency tooth extraction after checking the source of the pain.

How Can I Treat an Excruciating Toothache?

1. Over-the-counter Medications

Medications like ibuprofen can also help to manage an excruciating toothache. But, do not exceed the recommended dosage to quicken the relief.

2. Aloe Vera

Aloe vera gel does more than heal burns and minor cuts. Dental research shows that it can also treat toothache and soothe gums. Simply massage the gel gently on the painful tooth.

3. Cold Compress

A cold compress has a striking potency for remedying swollen and painful gums. Wrap a cold compress in a towel and place it on the painful area for 15 to 25 minutes. Alternatively, you can use ice in place of a cold compress. You can repeat the process every few hours till the pain fully subsides.

4. Peppermint Tea Bags

Peppermint tea bags can significantly help relieve excruciating pain in the gums. After making the tea, leave it till it is slightly warm before applying it to the affected area. You can also use cold peppermint tea to soothe painful gums. Put a used tea bag in the freezer for a couple of minutes to chill, and then apply the bag to your tooth.

5. Vanilla Extract

The alcohol content of vanilla extract can help relieve excruciating pain in the tooth. To use vanilla extract on your teeth, put some on a clean cotton ball and apply gently to the affected tooth or gum. You can repeat this as many times a day as needed until the pain reduces.

6. Guava Leaves

Guava leaf is another super-effective remedy from Mother Earth. It possesses anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties that can aid in wound healing. Wash fresh guava leaves and boil in clean water to make a mouthwash. Finally, rinse your mouth with the solution a few times.

7. Warm Saltwater

A warm saltwater solution can loosen debris between the teeth. Moreover, it reduces inflammation and disinfects the mouth. Stir not more than a half-teaspoon of salt into a glass of warm water and rinse your mouth thoroughly with the solution.

Wrap Up

With the methods we’ve discussed, you can stop excruciating toothaches in their tracks. However, if the pain persists for more than a day or two, consult a dentist for proper examination and treatment.
