What are traditional braces?

How do traditional braces work?
The process for receiving traditional braces starts with you attending a consultation to find out if the metal braces will provide you with the best possible results. We may examine your mouth and ask some questions at this stage. Next, we take x-rays, impressions and photographs of your mouth.
At your next appointment, providing the teeth has been cleaned and checked for cavities, the braces are fitted to your teeth. We use special glue to stick the brackets in position before attaching the wire and elastics as required or any other metal parts such as bands that may be used to move the teeth into position.
You will need to visit your orthodontist at regular intervals so they can check the progress of the treatment and make any adjustments as necessary. The braces will remain in position until the treatment is completed.

Once the braces are removed, you will need to wear a retainer to ensure the teeth don’t move back to their original position.
Do braces hurt?
Braces do not hurt, especially if installed on your teeth by a highly-skilled professionals. However, you may experience some tenderness around your gums and cheeks after the procedure. As you get used to braces, the feelings should subside.
While you wait for this to happen, we may prescribe pain relievers to eliminate any discomfort. Keep in mind that braces may seem like an inconvenience but once the treatment is completed, your new smile will show that it was worth it.
